Securing Freedom

Over the past few years, there’s been a lot of talk about “change.” Most of us agree, change is something this country desperately needs. And we’ve had a good bit of change in just the past 12 months, but the change we’re seeing now is not the change we need. The truth is, real change has to begin with us. And by us, I mean Republicans.

Announcement

Ronald Reagan is credited with describing America as a “shining city on a hill.” I have always had a similar vision about what America should be, coupled with the recognition that we reach that goal only through the hard work of ordinary citizens who are willing to step off the sidelines and make their communities better. That belief has led me to get involved in my community; it led me to run for the State Senate; and it led me to run for the U.S. Congress.

When I decided last year to run for Congress, I did so, in large part, out of a frustration with what America has become. I am deeply concerned about irresponsible borrowing and spending, excessive government involvement in private affairs, and an elitist, out-of-touch Congress that seems to care very little about what the average American wants. Those deficiencies are not limited to either political party; Republicans and Democrats both have failed us.

Unfortunately, most of these problems are not limited to Washington, D.C., either. In South Carolina, years of poor budgeting have combined with an outdated and inefficient government structure to hold us back and make us more susceptible to economic difficulties. We are right to be concerned and frustrated with Washington, but we should begin our rebuilding here at home.

I have worked hard in my short time in the Senate to make state government more transparent, more efficient, and more responsible. In the midst of difficult times for our state, with a budget fight looming in the Senate, I feel the need to remain in the Senate to fight for the people of Aiken, Edgefield, McCormick, and Saluda.

Additionally, on a much more personal level, I cherish the ability to come home to Edgefield every night and spend time with my wife and daughter. I am unwilling to be an absent father, and I have no desire to raise a family in the cesspool of Washington, D.C.

For these reasons, I have decided to end my campaign for Congress and concentrate on my promise to shake up Columbia.

I am deeply and sincerely grateful for the support I have received from folks across the district, and I value the lifelong friendships I have made along the way. I ask that the people of Congressional District 3 join me in backing a candidate who will fight for the conservative principles on which this nation was founded and who will get involved and work to restore our rightful place as the shining city on a hill.

Shane Massey Dominates Debate

TAXPAYERS ARE READY TO SHAKE UP CONGRESS

Last night in McCormick, Senator Shane Massey, sent a resounding message to the voters of the 3rd Congressional District. From the depths of Lake Oconee, to the Savannah River Site, Shane conveyed to voters why he is the best candidate for Congress. In a 90 minute debate moderated by former State Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson, the six Republican candidates fielded tough questions on the economy, foreign policy, health care, unemployment, and other critical issues facing America. Senator Massey reassured voters that if elected, he will continue the reform policies that he has pushed in Columbia. He believes we can create jobs and grow our economy by stopping the government takeover of everything from the automotive industry to health care, vowing to fight wasteful pet project spending and continuing the push for offshore drilling to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Now is the Time for Leadership

Members of Leadership North Augusta received some encouragement to step up and be leaders in these economically trying times.

During the group’s Government Day, its members heard from Aiken County’s Legislative Delegation, along with Aiken County Councilman Chuck Smith and North Augusta Mayor Lark Jones.

As delegation members explained what they do during the class’s visit to the State House, Sen. Shane Massey said, “Anybody can do this job when the money is pouring in … This is the time to be a leader.” He encouraged the class of future leaders not to back away “no matter how gloomy things get.”

Massey said, “This is the time to step forward.” Continue Reading…

Next Common Sense Chat: TW Boones in Greenwood

Friends,

Over the past year, we’ve held many Common Sense Chats across the Congressional district. These informal conversations have allowed me to share my ideas with you and, more importantly, listen to your concerns about our state and country. I’ve learned a lot from listening to you, and you’ve given me a lot of positive feedback.

My next Common Sense Chat will be at T.W. Boones, 405 Main Street, in Greenwood on Monday, February 15, 2010. We’ll start at 6:00 and go until about 8:00.

If you’re in the area, please come out to the T.W. Boones this Monday night. I’d really like to hear your concerns, and I’d appreciate the opportunity to share some of my thoughts with you.

I hope to see you Monday night.

A Campaign Update

I Hope everyone is doing well! Shane and I have been traveling the district, spreading his conservative message, and picking up support as we go! Last Monday, we were up in Seneca and had a great turn out at our Meet and Greet at the home of Brit and Judy Adams! If anyone is interested in hosting a Meet and Greet please let me know! But as we are traveling around, people tell us that they want to help out, and now we have a way for you to help the campaign right from the comfort of your own home!

Today, we launched a program called voter fetch. It allows supporters to make phone calls from home. All you have to do is go to www.voterfetch.com/shanemassey and sign up. The numbers and scripts are already loaded for you! We are doing trial runs starting today for our next Meet and Greet in Laurens, next Monday February 8th at the Hummingbird Cafe. I hope everyone is having a great week, and thanks again for supporting Shane’s cause to Shake Up Congress!
